Holly Berries
Welcome to Holly Berries
Holly Berries is home to our Year 1 and Year 2 children. They are taught by Mrs Cox on a Monday and Tuesday and Miss Pearson Wednesday to Friday. Miss Worgan provides TA support each morning and Mrs James in the afternoons. Miss Goodall also works in the class as a 1:1 TA.
What author are we reading this term?
Julia Donaldson
Julia Donaldson is best known for her popular rhyming stories for children, especially those illustrated by Axel Scheffler, which include The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and Stick Man. She originally wrote songs for children's television but has concentrated on writing books since the words of one of her songs, "A Squash and a Squeeze", were made into a children's book in 1993.
PE
Our PE day is Wednesday. We ask that children come to school dressed in appropriate PE kit:
- Black shorts/track suit bottoms
- T-shirt in your house colour (red, green, blue, yellow) - no logos please
- School jumper/cardigan
- Trainers/daps
- Hair should be tied up and earrings should be removed or covered.
Forest Schools
We spend Thursday morning at Forest Schools. We ask that children come to school dressed in appropriate clothing:
- Old clothes with long sleeves and long trousers which you do not mind getting dirty.
- Waterproof jacket and trousers (labelled with their name)
- Wellies to be brought into school (labelled with their name)
- A spare pair of socks is always useful!
Please ensure that children don't wear their wellies into school and have regular shoes.

Common exception words
In Holly Berries, the children are learning either the Year 1 or Year 2 Common Exception words. These are words that cannot be read or written phonetically.
Below are the Common Exception word lists for both Year 1 and Year 2, which the children should be able to read and write by the end of their year.
Please read with your child at least 3 times a week.
Reading is a great way to spend time together and helps children with all areas of their learning.

Handwriting
The children in Holly Berries are practising their handwriting using the cursive style which has both lead-ins and lead-outs, so that all letters join, and so that this continuous flow of handwriting will enable them to write faster. If you would like to help them with this, the image below shows how each letter should be formed.
